Hello one and all,
First, Jablet wants to wish each and every one of you happy holidays.
Of course, things are going to be a little slowed down around here since I will be away on holidays in Montreal until the night of the 1st of January. You should still be able to get a hold of me through the usual means though I might be a little slower than usual. Unless everything goes wrong where I’ll be staying, you should be able to find me on Jablet as well during the holidays, so I’ll still be keeping tabs on the server as usual.
A lot of things have happened since we started. A lot of plans are still unrealized, but we’re hoping to offer more stuff officially in the near future.
A huge thank you to those that have donated to the cause in one way or another. Thank you for the e-mails, the words of encouragement and your show of gratitude. It might not mean much to you, but it has to us immeasurably.
Keep safe, keep touch with your loved ones (another reason to use Jablet?) and enjoy the holidays.
- Team Jablet

After many, many people asking us, we’ve finally given you a way to donate to Jablet.
The homepage has been updated with a donation button. All donations will be used to pay for hosting services (and perhaps to bump us up to a higher hosting package).
Thanks for using our services and thank you for your generous amounts of praise, help and encouragement.

I’m not quite Dennis Miller, but I’ll give it a shot.
We’ve been geting a lot of new users over the last day or so (72 at last count). There are several factors for this:
Despite the huge amount of growth within such a short period of time, we’re still far away from hiting any sort of resource snag. My preemptive growing of the server’s heap memory helped a lot and couldn’t have come at a better time.
I know that we’re basically still getting on our feet, but we’ve got many plans for services to help you use your tablet in better ways. As always, there’s several ideas in various stages of completeness (check previous posts or the forum for info on some of those).
A few people have asked about donations. We’re working on making that possible shortly and we’ll post here as soon as that’s ready.
If you need help, have an opinion or an idea, don’t be shy. We want to hear how we can help make your tablet experience an even better one.
Thank you for your support.

I’m expecting a sudden surge of new users within the coming weeks and was getting a little worried about the RAM usage of Openfire, which takes only 64MB by default. I’ve bumped up the RAM usage up to 200MB. Better safe than sorry.
I announced the downtime through the broadcast plugin, but apparently no one saw it. (The broadcast plugin was just updated the night before. Perhaps something got gummed up.)
Anyways, sorry for the ten seconds of downtime.

Hello everyone.
I’ve added a forum for Jablet a few days ago with a few specific modifications to integrate it into Jabber as well as add Skype to the list of IM protocols in profiles.
Some basic tutorials have been put on the forums to show people how to sign up for Jablet and get themselves started. Take a look at the Jabber forum for the tutorials. We’re adding screenshots and a tutorial for getting the IM gateways working from PSI sometime soon.
Huge thank you to tabrez for the screenshots.

I’ll be brief, here’s the latest going on with Jablet.
Rob has volunteered to work on our Jabber registration process, allowing people to register themselves as well as their IM gateways without needing any additional software. Just the tablet’s web browser.
- We’re still looking for people to help on site design as we badly need it.
- Fixed a problem where Jabber clients idle for more than 30 minutes at a time would be disconnected, causing me much frustration. This was fixed with a tweak to a hidden setting in Openfire. If you had a problem where your tablet would often disconnect, this should now be fixed.
- Jaiku #jablet channel: 11 users
- Jablet Jabber server: 16 registered users, 21 external IM gateway registrations.
Thanks for believing in us.

The ports used for the Jabber server have slightly changed. Normally, port 5222 were used for connections (both encrypted and unencrypted) and 5223 (for encrypted, however deprecated). As I’ve been asked by a few people to try to provide a way around firewalls (myself included in that group), I’ve moved the 5223 port to port 443. 5222 will work as always.
Let me know if it works for you.. or not at all.
EDIT: I made a change in iptables so that all port 5223 connection attempts will be redirected to port 443 automatically. No one needs to change anything and we get free firewall busting.
EDIT 2: Port 80 also redirected to 5222.

The Jablet Jabber server is now open for public use. The server is running Openfire with most major gateways supported. (IRC support had to be removed as it was against the TOS.) Please let me know if you come across any problems or need any help. You can find me at
jay@jablet.org on Jabber. The server you’ll need to connect to is jablet.org. I’ve enabled registration so you don’t have to ask for an account. Those of you more comfortable signing up through a web browser can do so here.
At the moment, it’s not possible to sign up for the various IM gateways through the tablet thanks to limitations in the tablet’s Jabber client, however I’m working on being able to sign you up to them as you sign up for a Jablet account through the web. Haven’t started on that yet though. For now, you’ll have to connect with a PC Jabber client and then sign up for each gateway separately… then when you start up the account on your tablet, you’ll have the gateways running. If you are having problems with this, get in touch with me and I’ll fix you up.
A persistant chatroom on the Jabber server has been opened for anyone interested in Jablet. The room is jablet on the conference.jablet.org server. Anyone with a Jabber account can join.
I’ve been working through several technical issues on the server. PHPBB3 installs but brings up nothing but blank pages. E-mail server seems wonky (so if you’ve sent me something there and I haven’t responded, you know why). If you have experience with PHPBB in general and want to help, drop me a line (leave a comment here or a PM on ITT). Follow along with our progress in the #jablet channel on Jaiku.
Well, hopefully this is a good start. As I’ve said many, many times before, we’re working on offering you more services as we go.
Don’t be afraid to ask if there’s something you’d like to see or are interested in.
…And now to sit down and enjoy my Saturday morning bacon and eggs. Yummy.

I got some stuff done today that I’m happy about. More bugs squashed in the video center database. More streams added. RSS feed for video center fully validates after having some iffy moments. Careful, some feeds might not work for you. Changed over the page that added feeds to using POST instead of GET to keep things from getting into the URL bar that we don’t want to see.
Bought Jablet.org this morning with a virtual hosting setup. Quite happy with it. Openfire is set up on it and it’s working quite nicely.
I’ve had some new ideas on how to have newbie users get their Jabber accounts up and running fast. At sign up, we’re going to run a small PHP Jabber client invisible to the user that will ask and add the different IM gateways, therefore removing the need to add them from a PC Jabber client manually. That’s not yet started, but will be once I work on learning about PHP sessions and doing secure logins and such.
Jabber should be ready within a day for advanced users that know what they’re doing. Drop me a line if you want the login info.
Caught the microblogging fever. Updates and other comments will be posted to the #jablet Jaiku channel. You don’t need to be a part of the site to view the feed, however if you are needing a Jaiku invite, let me know.
